“Get well with Tigo”
In November 2012, BIMA supported Tigo Tanzania to launch the first life and hospitalization cover insurance product available via mobile phone in Tanzania. The launch of the life and hospitalization product follows the success of the free life insurance product that has been running for the past 18 months.
BIMA is excited about bringing mobile delivered micro health insurance products to the underserved population of Tanzania for the first time ever.
The new product will enable customers to obtain life and hospitalization insurance by selecting a desired level of coverage and making payments through airtime or Tigo Pesa (mobile money) deductions. Tigo now allows customers to choose between 6 levels of cover based on their personal preferences allowing them to obtain insurance cover upon their passing or if they should spend a night in a designated hospital.
The hospitalization insurance will cover customers for up to 30 nights in hospital via a nightly payout system of a lump sum of cash (or Tigo Pesa payout) irrespective of the ailment that the customer suffered. Prices start at TZs 750 per month for the Bati package.
As usual, BIMA supports Tigo in the end-to-end delivery and management of this product, being responsible for the sales, distribution, general admin, day-to-day operations and the technical platform enabling the service. In Tanzania, the product is underwritten by Golden Crescent Assurance and MicroEnsure supports in claims management activities.
For the first time ever, this product aims to provide the underserved Tanzanian market with affordable options for both health and life insurance and BIMA is proud to be a driver in this revolutionary space in the Tanzanian market.
